Visaya Hoffie is a Queensland-based artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art at Queensland College of Art. Trained as a painter, she often also engages a range of different media including sculpture, painting, printmaking, textiles, assemblage, inflatables, zines and animation. Her work addresses themes raised by the impact of social media on the everyday. She draws from popular culture and the cultural histories of outsiders and ‘Others’ to explore the possibilities of magic, ritual, re-enchantment and critical cultural re-evaluations that engage with crucial contemporary issues while maintaining one foot in radical playfulness.
She has received a number of awards and opportunities to exhibit in galleries across Australia, and has enjoyed extensive experiences travelling throughout the Asia-Pacific, the US, Europe and the UK. In 2018, she worked at leading UK institutions including the V&A Museum; the Museum of Everything; and at the Frieze Masters Art Fair and 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair. She currently works at QAGOMA bookstore and cinema and as a tutor in the Painting Department at the QCA. Her prolific exhibiting schedule continues through visual arts projects in Australia and overseas. Her art practice challenges traditional boundaries of visual arts production, bleeding their edges by sharp references to socially-mediated realities and altered understanding and relationships between communities and places.
